Changing gears takes some practice but the best way to start out is to have the chain in the middle sprocket of the upper chain ring. When you are in this chain ring you can use entire range of gears on the front wheel cassette. When you are climbing hills change the upper chain ring to the smallest ring and limit your front wheel cassette movement from the middle to the inside. If you cross the chain, you will risk having the chain come off. The same holds true for the descents or downhill, keep the chain on the front wheel located on the middle to the outside of the cassette and put the upper chain ring in the big ring.
